WSSPC Events
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 12:00 Noon – 5:00 pm WSSPC Field Trip – Earthquakes and Earthquake Research in Western Nevada
The field trip will give an overview of local earthquake geology, review emergency response issues such as post disaster building inspections, and view the engineering and seismological laboratories at the University of Nevada, Reno. Research is being conducted at the university to develop new knowledge about failure modes of structures, such as bridges, and to further our understanding of earthquakes and shaking phenomena. The $50 fee includes transportation and a box lunch. Lead by Craig dePolo, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 10:00 am – 11:30 am WSSPC Opening Session Includes discussion of New National Seismic Hazard Maps, Reconnaissance following the 2006 Kiholo Earthquake, and the Role of the Seismic Safety Commissions in Influencing Building Code Decisions.
1:00 pm – 4:15 pm ICC/WSSPC JOINT EDUCATION SESSION – Earthquake Hazards and Building Codes
Earthquake Hazards and Building Codes will commence with an overview of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program headed by the lead agency National Institute of Standards and Technology. The U.S. Geological Survey will then review the earthquake hazards of the United States and present the newest National Seismic Hazard Maps that serve as the ground-motion basis for calibrating levels of seismic-resistant design. There will be discussion of the many realities of building code adoption, including influences of culture, economics, local politics, and human resources.
Presenters: John R. “Jack” Hayes, Jr., David Applegate, David Maurstad, John Henry and Ron Lynn
Session Level: All Levels
Track: Seismic Professions Served: Engineers, Code Officials, Inspectors, Earth Scientists and Emergency Managers
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM Effectively Communicating
